Washington Reining Horse Association wrapped up the 2009 show season with the annual Fall Spectacular and Futurity, held this year at the Appleatchee Riding Club in Wenatchee, WA October 9-11, 2009.
The show began with the first Non Pro class of the two slate show. Mary Jo House on Sir Smart Whiz won the class, kicking off an impressive weekend of accomplishments. Mary Jo came home with a reserve championship in the second Non Pro along with the Intermediate Non Pro, and also split both slates of Limited Non Pro classes, with a championship in one and reserve championship in the other. Terri Hunter and Chocolate Hustler had an equally successful weekend, with a championship and reserve championship in the two slates of Non Pro classes, the Intermediate Non Pro championship, Novice Horse Non Pro Level 2 championship, and Co-championship of the Prime Time Non Pro with Alayne Blickle and Dealin Pay Chex. Alayne also brought home a win in Limited Non Pro.
Mike Helsen had a good weekend in the Open division, winning the first slate on Lenas Smokum Oak owned by Tana Hanson, and tying for second on Power Trip Nic owned by Keith Johnson. Cory Hutchings won the Open in the second slate on Almond Bark Chic owned by George and Cindy McKinzie. Continuing on their winning ways after sweeping the Loot For the Grassroots in Las Vegas earlier this year, Ryann McKinzie took first on RU Missin Diamonds and second on Whiztacular in the first slate of Youth 14 -18. Holly Lansidel and Smart Like Steady swept both slates of the Youth 13 and Under. Mike Stokes swept Novice Horse Open Level 1 and 2 on Gundealer for owner Dana King.
In the money consistently throughout the weekend, Kevin Montgomery and Im Sure Peppy Chic won the Rookie I. It was good to see Julie Walker and Chics Dry Eclipse back in the show pen, winning Rookie 2.
The highlight of the weekend are the futurity classes held Saturday night in conjunction with a catered BBQ dinner that has become a favorite with spectators and exhibitors alike. Taking home $905.70 and other prizes, Roxanne Peters won the Non Pro Futurity on Shes Boomtastic. Roxanne Peters is a familar face in our NRHA circle of friends, primarily as a market breeder and owner of a Northwest favorite stallion, Jac Daniels Neat (Hollywood Jac 86 x Lady Be Great x Great Pine). It may be surprising that she has never had opportunity to keep a prospect for herself to show until Shes Boomtastic by Boomernic out of Mity Chex (Poppa Chex x King Fritz). "I have shown each of my broodmares including Mity Chex the dam of Shes Boomtastic, so while 'Janey' was very green, I knew how to prepare her and what I had to do to get her shown and have a good experience the first time out" Roxanne stated. She is a great mover and easy to change leads on, so while she was somewhat insecure with traffic in our warm ups, she loved being in arena alone and was a "true little show horse, her circles were really fun!"
Shes Boomtastic is for sale, but if she doesn't sell, Roxanne would love to keep her for the Derbys in 2010 and get more experience showing the younger horses. "My friends’ and trainers’ biggest challenge will be keeping me from breeding her to Jac Daniels Neat...."
Winning both the Limited and Open Futurity divisions, Darren Stancik brought home $1040.48 on Chic Please Dunit for owner Janet Hurlburt. ‘Duffy’ is a special horse for Janet, out of her Hollywood Dun It mare Dunitinthebuff and by Chic Please. Darren describes Duffy as a thinking-man’s horse: “Very quiet and sensitive, easy to teach”. Darren said he enjoyed using his brain more than brawn in training Duffy. According to Darren, “Duffy’s turnarounds and circles have always been very natural”. In comparing Duffy to his dam ‘Buffy’, whom Darren also trained, Duffy is similar to mom Buffy, “being the same horse today as he was yesterday”. Duffy is transitioning to his new job as owner Janet Hurlburt’s non pro horse over the winter. Look for Janet and Duffy to have a long and prosperous non pro career together.
