Port Angeles Slide In 2005

“Quaint” is the word that best describes the atmosphere here at the yearly Port Angeles Slide In show located on the Olympic peninsula in Washington. The entire community of Port Angeles supports their local organization with HUGE enthusiasm – welcome banners, sponsorships.... This is usually the smallest of our four shows in the number of runs, but that doesn’t detract from the quality of the show nor the level of competition.
The Port Angles show crew once again purchased some great show awards and handed out over 30 door prizes throughout the weekend. Prizes are purchased yearly through Darren Rentas’s local tack store (and he is kind enough to bring his store to the show so we can all shop!). They included cinches, bridle bags and jeweled head stalls. Some of the door prizes included grooming items, coupons and gift certificates for feed and restaurants.
Bruce Pinkerton held, what is now, his “yearly” feed of fish and seafood! Salmon, tri-tip, halibut, shrimp and oysters (yummy!) were the main feed for the “lotted cattle” milling about the BBQ. Additionally, we had salad, veggies, bread, homemade potato salad and then we cooked smores for desert. There were more than a few kids – big and little - with gooey hands and faces when all was said and done. These “gathering times” are what we so cherish and will remember for years to come.
Our two judges for the show were Ed Cridge and Mark Miller. Both being from Texas, the mild climate gave them both a break from the growing heat and blazing sun in Texas. They both did an EXCELLENT job over the weekend and hope to see their smiling faces return to Washington for another WRHA show.
“The Show Happenings”
The NRHA Open classes paved the way into the Slide In this year and Aaron Doss not only swept all three divisions – Open, Intermediate, Limited - but he posted the highest mark of the show, a 72.5. Aaron has been a contender all year long on Nancy Stancik’s well muscled sorrel gelding Peppys Double Chant. He and “Louie” have posted wins all year in the Limited Open class and now it
was his turn to win it all. Aaron did a superb job showing him - he must be listening to his boss, Darren Stancik (who has a pretty fair “rap” sheet of wins and his client’s had a phenomenal show here again). Aaron has been working for Darren for the past couple of years.
Great job Aaron! The treasures for his win were a Morrison, Pewter, Plaque and over one thousand dollars.
Cathy Martin
Cathy Martin was second in a draw of 28 and came out with a first in both the NRHA Non Pro and Intermediate Non Pro classes. She was riding her great gelding Smart Little King by Smart Chic Olena. Cathy has owned “Mac” for five wonderful years and they have enjoyed much success together. Cathy is one of the reasons these WRHA/NRHA shows have been SO successful. She has spent numerous hours creating a sponsorship program for our shows AND she is the head of the show committee. Which means, she has put in massive amounts of time for our four yearly show series to be so successful – Thank You, Thank You , Thank You Cathy!
Amy Roy put a few more notches in her “win stick” this weekend. She stood right behind Cathy in both the NRHA Non Pro and Intermediate Non Pro classes but was right on top in the NRHA Limited Non Pro class and the NRHA Novice Horse Non Pro class. Her mare is a big, stout bay by Chocolate Chic Olena and out of Miss Cutter Clone, who was bred and raised by Sally Hoppe. When all is said and done in the show pen, Godiva Chic will be one heck of a broodmare …she will have the earnings, personality and ability to pass on to her foals. Amy purchased the horse upon recommendation from Darren Stancik, her trainer. Amy was also the winner of the Dave Reaume perpetual trophy last year riding Godiva Chic.
The trophy honoring Dave Reaume and his valor for brining Reining to the peninsula was awarded to another Stancik protégé, Samantha Gately riding Jac Be Smart. She is a shining example of exactly why he brought reining to the community. At the mere age of ten, here is a young lady who obviously puts a vast amount of time and energy into reining as she “looks like an old pro” out in the pen, and yet she is still in her first year of showing. Reining is a great place for energies to be placed and achievements to be won and responsibilities to be learned for the young (those of us who are older too!!).
“Sammie” proved herself over and over during the weekend. She also won the NRHA Youth 13 and under class and the NRHA Rookies class of 20 entries. Her wonderful bay gelding with a striking, full black mane and that great natural head carriage is by Jac Daniels Neat out of Smart Janie Jr. She looks sooo cute in her lipstick red chaps out in the show pen and she is definitely a rider to watch grow through the ranks in the next few years.
Darren Stancik pulled in yet another win for his “barn” on Karen Larsen’s gelding Baci Dun It in the NRHA Novice Horse Open class. Marking a 71.5 they pocketed $309.65 and a Pewter for their win. Baci has been in the Northwest for a number of years and he is just a cute, cute little buckskin gelding with a big heart. Karen has owned him for two years now and they have become quite a team themselves.
Heidi Weide
Heide Weide rode Aprils Smokin Gun to a win in the NRHA Youth class 14-18. She is currently riding under the guidance of Mike Helsen along with his assistant Andrea Kohen.
Any show must have it’s sponsors and volunteers to make it all successful. To all those – THANKS! Jan Peterson and her son Justin Peterson – leaders of the PA crew, Cheryl James Photography, Thomas Gillotti for paid warm-ups, the gate crew, the announcer, the 10 year old singer of the Star Spangled Banner YOU ALL MADE IT POSSIBLE…and for a complete list of sponsors see our web site at www.wrha.net. “Now spin your partner round and round and go for the gold!”
